However, never fast simply because you think it will produce “better” results. Only fast when your healthcare provider or laboratory instructs you to.
4. Medications and Supplements May Play a Role
Prescription medicines, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements can influence certain laboratory results.This is why it is important to tell your healthcare provider about everything you are taking before interpreting an unexpected result. You should not stop prescribed medication to change a blood-test result unless your healthcare professional specifically instructs you to do so. A result that looks unusual on paper may make more sense once your medication history is taken into account.
5. Your Menstrual Cycle Can Influence Some Results
For some laboratory tests, being on your menstrual period can affect results. MedlinePlus lists menstruation as a factor that may influence certain laboratory measurements. This does not mean every blood test is affected by menstruation. The significance depends on the specific test and the individual. If your healthcare provider is investigating anemia, for example, information about heavy menstrual bleeding may be particularly relevant because blood loss can contribute to low hemoglobin levels.
6. One Abnormal Result Is Not the Whole Story
Perhaps the biggest mistake people make when reading blood reports is focusing on one number in isolation. Imagine a patient sees a slightly abnormal result and immediately assumes the worst. A healthcare professional, however, may consider several related measurements, compare them with previous reports, review symptoms, and review the patient’s medical history.
